Community Circle: Stories of Immigration

Welcome to The Community Circle hosted by AFAR!

Sunday morning at Rebus Works with espresso + pastries

The Community Circle was created to serve as a "third place" - a place for community to gather outside of work and school - for people of all backgrounds in and around Raleigh. The  Circle is a time to share, receive, learn and connect with your neighbors. Each Circle will have a discussion topic and a guest speaker. We welcome your ideas and suggestions for both.

This time our focus will be adding to the story of immigration and immigrants in our community. We want to send out a special invite to those who have immigrated to the United States and landed in Raleigh, to share their story in a safe and appreciative place.

We are very excited to welcome local immigration attorney Ana Nunez. We look forward to learning from her professional experience, and hearing about her personal story.

We also look forward to welcoming our friend Judge Sam Hamadani. She will also share her family’s experiences of immigration from Iran, as well as insight as a local Family Court Judge.

Food for thought & discussion:

“How Immigration Became So Controversial” by Derek Thompson, Feb 2018, The Atlantic

“The Danger of a Single Story” by Chimamamndo Ngozi Adiche, 2009, TEDtalk.

Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.
