READY OR NOT, HERE COMES 2019!

Welcome to a New Year! Cheers to taking one step closer to 2020! But it’s not that election cycle most on our minds… it’s an “odd year” which means every single seat on Raleigh City Council is up for re-election. Can you believe that people are already talking about another election!? It’s true! So go ahead and save the date for October 8 2019, because your vote is your voice!

AFAR plans to keep you updated on the candidates, the issues and opportunities to advocate for your family’s values on the local level. We will connect you with fun, family-friendly and community building events that keep you plugged into the conversation. We are on a mission to ensure our governing bodies are reflective our community’s values and people.

This year we will continue our very successful monthly Civic Kids’ Story Hour, one Saturday at month from 10:30-11:30 at Read With Me Raleigh. This casual, family oriented event allows parents to meet their local officials and community helpers, while also inspiring kids to leadership. Additionally we will host a Community Circle every other month on Sunday afternoons from 2:30-4:30. This event is a “third place” where adults can have tough conversations in a safe place, often reflecting upon selected opinion pieces, articles or short videos. We use this time to support and challenge each other with hard questions about the world we are building.

As we look forward into 2019, we are hoping to engage more of YOU in our activities. We are looking for folks to help us expand our capacity to support women running for office, representation at demonstrations and protests, and ability to respond quickly to the changing political landscape. Sometimes its as simple as helping us staff a table at an event. Other times it’s making phone calls for a great candidate we believe in. We can help expand participation at political fundraisers with more volunteers to monitor “kids zones”. We always appreciate participation in our events and feedback on how to increase engagement. Stay tuned for more information and/or reach out to katie@afaraleigh.org or ryan@afaraleigh.org to chat further.

We maintain a monthly newsletter, website, and original content blog to disseminate important information to our community about local political happenings. Our highly engaged and active social media platforms continue to grow and gain momentum as we share information about national news, political movements, resources, events, and reactions to current affairs through the lens of progressive parenting and activism. Some events are inclusive the whole family, while others offer more of an opportunity for peer connection. In everything we are striving to build a more progressive community. We invite your voice and welcome your participation.
