Sustaining the Resistance

Here's the highlights on tips self care during the long four years ahead:

1) Don't get used to Trump - get away from him. Allow yourself periods of distance from the media in order to prevent numbing and normalization of the constant assault on civil rights. You don't have to live in a constant state of anger and anxiety in order to fight back. Take breaks, refresh, then dive back in and stay at it.

2) Focus your energy on a limited amount of issues. Like 1 or 2. or 3. The movement works as a coalition of people focused on different issues. Do not engage in activist one-upmanship, and don’t allow yourself to be shamed for not being fully briefed and up to date on everything.

3) Make Activism FUN! Which just happens to be a big goal of AFAR! It doesn't always have to involve laborious rounds of phone calls to Congress. Let's use our creativity to ignite visible representations of progressive family values in our community. We can share art, music and literature in pursuit of social justice. Tap existing social networks and find your tribe.

4) Take care of yourself, and your little people. Family always comes first. If you let yourself get run down that certainly won't help anything. Remember those things that sustained you before it felt like the world was falling apart, and keep them going. Sleep. Eat Well. Pray. Love.
